Some of us are learning to play with Japanese けん玉.(2024年6月6日)

These days it rains a lot, but there are many fine days also and then we can go to the park! Some of us are learning to play with Japanese けん玉. We like hula hoops and ring toss, too. Others are learning the rules of baseball by practicing T-ball sometimes.

And, of course, sometimes we just run for fun or look for insects!

On May 24 we went to the Nogeyama Zoo.(2024年5月24日)

On May 24 we went to the Nogeyama Zoo. The weather was fine and we could see many interesting animals. We played a game called “Animal Treasure Hunt”.

We each had cards with different animals on them and when we found that animal we marked the card. It helped us remember what we saw.

Of course, there were things besides animals in the zoo to see. We also saw some wild squirrels and many crows that live at the zoo but are not IN the zoo. We played in an old streetcar, too.

We had lunch together and talked about the animals we had seen. Some of us ate inside the zoo restaurant and some of us ate outside on the grass. After lunch we had free time to find animals we could not find in the morning or to see some animals again. We had such a good time we are already looking forward to next year!

It’s April and here that means a new school year has begun.(2024年4月12日)

It’s April and here that means a new school year has begun. Our first task this week was to tell about ourselves. We made fold-out personal “portraits” to show what we look like, what we like to eat and to do. It was fun and a good way to practice how to introduce ourselves when we meet a new friend.

Spring School(2024年3月28日)

On the last two days of our special Spring School class in March, we went to the park to play games in the sunshine. On the 28th we played with a colorful parachute and did some bean bag tossing at a target. It was great! On the 29th the weather was not really so good but we had fun trying to fly the kites we had put together and decorated.

Here are a few photos we took!

Setsubun (2024年2月2日)

Today we celebrated Setsubun, which is sometimes rather strangely referred to in English as “Bean Throwing Day”. It’s not really about beans except that roasted soy beans are thrown at “ogres” to dispel the cold of winter and to encourage us to look forward to spring, which we hope will come soon! It’s a different sort of Groundhog Day. Additionally, it is actually February 3, but tomorrow is a Saturday and we have no school on Saturdays. We had a great time making “horns” to play at being the ogres, and throwing the beans at the ogres when it was our turn to throw.

Yesterday we celebrated Winnie-the-Pooh Day!(2024年1月20日)

Yesterday we celebrated Winnie-the-Pooh Day!

We made party hats to wear and heard about and watched Winnie the Pooh film clips. We also painted a poster that shows the “100 Aker Wood” from the Pooh books.

Today we made some popcorn and talked about how it grows and why it “pops” and watched some more Winnie the Pooh stories. Why popcorn? Today is National Popcorn Day in the US!

Pooh Bear and his friends were the inspiration for our class names at HK International Preschools. Our 2 year old class is the Roo Class, 2-3 YO is the Piglet Class, 3-4 YO is the Tigger Class, 4-5 YO is the Rabbit Class, and 5-6 YO is the Owl Class. Many of our school decorations follow a Pooh & Friends theme and each day at our school we strive to be a happy family, each person appreciated for their uniqueness and what they can contribute to our school as a whole, just like in the Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

Halloween Day(2023年10月31日)

For the past 11 years on Halloween Day, we have done two things; everyone wears a costume all day, including teachers! We all dress up carefully, and then we parade down the Motomachi Shopping Street after 11:00 a.m. These two things have become our tradition. Later in the day we have Trick or Treat and play games, and maybe see a Halloween video. It’s always a lot of fun. This year the costumes were the best ever and we had a great time parading!

運動会・Sports Day(2023年10月15日)

Our Sports Day was scheduled for October 15, Sunday. But it rained all day and so instead we gathered on October 16, Monday. We had a good time doing Hokey Pokey and Radio Exercises #1 with our parents and grandparents and friends. We played some interesting games, like Giant Tic Tac Toe, Egg-in-the-Spoon Race, a special game for the Roos and Piglets called ‘I Found It!’ and of course, Red and White Basketball and the speed races. Then we each got a medal. We can hardly wait for next year!
