The younger a child is when they are exposed to the sounds of a new language the better their chance of learning that language in the future. A child's ears are ready to accept sounds from any language on earth when they are born, but after a time the brain begins to glean unnecessary brain cells - such as the sounds of English or French or Korean or any other language which are not necessary for speaking Japanese. These unnecessary parts are allowed to die as the brain goes about the work of making synapses that ARE necessary for survival in the child's daily life. In order to keep these parts we simply need to keep them in working order and that is why living with a new lan-guage in "immersion" is an extremely efficient way to learn.
We created a lovely new kids illustration logo this year and so we designed an HKI Summer T-shirt as well.

These days it rains a lot, but there are many fine days also and then we can go to the park! Some of us are learning to play with Japanese けん玉. We like hula hoops and ring toss, too. Others are learning the rules of baseball by practicing T-ball sometimes.
And, of course, sometimes we just run for fun or look for insects!
On May 24 we went to the Nogeyama Zoo. The weather was fine and we could see many interesting animals. We played a game called “Animal Treasure Hunt”.
We each had cards with different animals on them and when we found that animal we marked the card. It helped us remember what we saw.
Of course, there were things besides animals in the zoo to see. We also saw some wild squirrels and many crows that live at the zoo but are not IN the zoo. We played in an old streetcar, too.
We had lunch together and talked about the animals we had seen. Some of us ate inside the zoo restaurant and some of us ate outside on the grass. After lunch we had free time to find animals we could not find in the morning or to see some animals again. We had such a good time we are already looking forward to next year!
It’s April and here that means a new school year has begun. Our first task this week was to tell about ourselves. We made fold-out personal “portraits” to show what we look like, what we like to eat and to do. It was fun and a good way to practice how to introduce ourselves when we meet a new friend.
